Deep in the heart of West Cork lies the old market town of Dunmanway, which name derives from Dun-na-m-beam – the fort of the pinnacles. Encompassed by spectacular scenery, with hills and lakes to the North, South and West, Dunmanway has often been referred to as ‘The Gateway to The Mountains’ and is ideal for hillwalking, fishing and horse-riding. Dunmanway’s rich history has left it many legacies including several fine historical buildings which include the 32 metre tall Ballinacariga Castle approx. 8 km from Dunmanway town.

The recently restored Model School has served the town since 1848 and 5 km north of Dunmanway lies the birthplace of Sam Maguire, the famed republican whose name is synonymous with Gaelic Football. Other historical places of interest to visit are nearby Beal na Blath – the assassination site of Michael Collins and the grave of Sam Maguire which rests at St. Mary’s Church.

Dunmanway is the home of the famous Old Ballabuidhe Horse Fair and Races dating back to 1615.  The Ballabuidhe Horse Fair and Races attract a huge number of visitors annually in excess of 70,000.  The unique Horse Fair incorporates buying and selling of fine horses, entertainment and shows for children and a chance to reunite with relatives and family from all over the world.

Due to its central location Dunmanway is the ideal base from which to visit Cork City and explore the renown beauty of West Cork  to sample its culture, cuisine and hospitality.
